Policies in Lumiun DNS

How to create and apply policies with blocks, block and permission lists, and free times

Policies are the control center of Lumiun DNS. They function as a set of rules applied to network devices, allowing you to define content blocks, release times, security filters, and restrictions on search engines and YouTube.

When you access the Lumiun DNS dashboard, available at dns.lumiun.com, the first screen displayed will be Access Policies.

How to create a new policy

  1. Click New Policy.
  2. The next page is for you to name your policy based on its use. In the description, you can enter information about how it will be applied to your network. After that, click Create policy.
  3. On the policy configuration screen, you can:

    • Set free hours (times when browsing will be allowed);

    • Exclude the policy from the network, if necessary;

    • Enable the Block methods of bypassing filtering option (recommended to prevent attempts to circumvent the filters).

Security and privacy

  • Protection filters: This section contains the main filters for protection against threats and unwanted content.
  • Safe Search: This section allows you to restrict search results on Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo. As for YouTube, it will block inappropriate comments and videos on the platform.
  • Block top-level domains (TLDs): This section allows you to block a TLD, where any domain ending in it will not be accessed, even if other rules allow it. Recommended for TLDs with a high abuse rate.

Focus and productivity

In this tab, you will find filters focused on productivity in the workplace or study environment.

Block list

The Block List allows you to manually add specific domains that you want to block, even if they are not included in the default filters. Simply enter the URL in the field provided and click Add.

Allow list

The Allow list allows you to manually add specific domains that you want to allow, even if they may be blocked by other filters. Simply enter the URL in the field provided and click Add.

Free hours

After you set a free hour, a clock icon will appear next to the filters and applications that are blocked. To apply the free hour, just click on the clock, which will turn green for better visibility.

Tip: Policies can be inserted in more than one site, while a site can contain only one policy. Keep this in mind when you finish configuring your policy and linking it to a site.
